Although
the First XI got the worst of a low-scoring
match with local rivals Attenborough, all
the other senior sides won. The first
XI finished 19 runs short of Attenborough's
total, having restricted the visitors to
just 155, with Umair Hassan once more recording
a five-wicket haul. The second XI scored
a much-needed win at Hucknall, while the
third XI easily beat Thrumpton, with spinner
Jack Park taking 5 for 9. On Sunday, the
First XI beat Thurgaton, while the 2nd XI
beat Southwell II.

2nd
XI
|
| Long
Eaton beat Hucknall II by 4 wickets.
Hucknall
145 all out (Tim Ainsworth 3/20; Paul Gent
3/33)
Long
Eaton 57 (Tim Murfin 57)
Long Eaton Cricket Clubs 2nd XI completed a
much-needed victory this weekend in an extremely tense game at near-rivals
Hucknall II.
After losing the toss Long Eaton were put into field on what
was widely believed to be an absolute road of a pitch, and while Long Eaton’s
bowlers all bowled well, Hucknall batted sensibly and found themselves well set
at 115 for 4 going into the last 10 overs. However a double change in the
bowling brought Long Eaton immediate reward as Tim Ainsworth (3 for 20) and
Hushman Chattar (3 for 11) blew away Hucknall’s middle and lower order,
collapsing them from 136 for 4 to 145 all out.
None of Long Eaton’s bowlers, however, can be faulted for
their efforts in difficult conditions, alongside Chattar and Ainsworth, seamer
Simon Cleaves bowled extremely well for little luck, while skipper Paul Gent
was the only other to get his name in the book, bowling 12 overs straight
through to pick up 3 for 33. Chasing 145 was by no means an easy ask however,
the pitch having proved itself to be far from the predicted road, playing
extremely low and slow, and sensible batting was certainly a must.
Such a start for Long Eaton was, however, never in doubt,
with opener Tim Murfin (57) playing a superb anchoring role to the innings
helping set the team on their way. However a glut of wickets, including that of
Murfin, fell around the crucial 30-over stage when Long Eaton looked to
accelerate towards the target, and threatened to take the game away from them,
and as the last 5 overs began, Long Eaton required a further 35 runs to win
with only 4 wickets remaining.
Step forward all-rounders Tim Ainsworth (23*) and Jon Pack
(15*), who continued to chase hard, however, and through a mixture of superb
running and several lusty blows whittled down the target from 34 from 5, to 25
from 4 and 18 from 3. The game was still in the balance however, but Pack
finished it off in resounding fashion, hammering 15 off the next over to all
but hand Long Eaton the tie in fine, if tense, style. Both certainly deserve
credit for their knocks under pressure.
This victory moves Long Eaton out of the relegation zone at
the expense of Hucknall. Form and consistency certainly need to be maintained
to avoid the drop, however, especially with two big games approaching in the
next fortnight.

The
Long Eaton 3rd eleven got back to winning ways with a determined victory that
saw a lot of character and no little skill from another very young side(which
included 6 players aged 15 or under).
Having been put in, Long Eaton lost wickets regularly but managed to scramble
their way to 101, which just got them a batting point. That meant they would have to
bowl with great discipline but also take wickets. This was done with all the
bowlers keeping the runs down by bowling good lines and lengths, and also by
some
top-quality fielding. The star this week was Jack Park, who finished with a
magnificent 5 for 9 from 5 brilliant overs. The bowlers were backed up by some
fantastic catching (which should should have happened the week before); with
Jayson Simnett taking 3 catches and Alex Reid, Rob Proctor and Skipper Andrew
Merriman all holding on to difficult chances. The result leaves Long Eaton 4th
in the table.

Sunday
2nd XI
Southwell
93 all out.
Long
Eaton 93/7.
Report
Long Eaton’s Sunday 2nd XI moved up to third in the table
with a nervy 3 wicket win against a Southwell side completely unrecognisable
from the one that had been unlucky not to hammer Long Eaton at the start of the
season.
After winning the toss, Long Eaton elected to field, and it
was to be their younger contingent of bowlers who were to lead the way in
bowling out the opposition for only 93. While Ben Brown (3 for 20) led the way
with the ball, 14-year-olds Rob Proctor (2 for 7 from 5) and Jack Park (2 for
18 from 8) also both bowled excellently, while Ryan Cuthbert (1 for 28) was
unlucky to bear the full force of some extremely heavy top-order hitting from
Southwell’s skipper (25) who obviously didn’t want to hang around, and without
whom Long Eaton’s target probably would have been a lot smaller.
Chasing such a low score shouldn’t have presented to many
problems, but in true club tradition Long Eaton made extremely hard work of the
task, and after a solid start (Dave Lister 24), a raft of poor shots and some
spirited bowling saw Long Eaton lose a rash of wickets to tumble from 32 for 1
to 46 for 5.
Things looked bleak for the home side, especially with a
very young and inexperience tail to come; however, Tony Cuthbert showed his own
experience, stepping up to plate and batting well under pressure, to steer Long
Eaton home, ably supported by both Iwan Thomas and the aforementioned Jack
Park.
It wouldn’t be Long Eaton Cricket Club if we hadn’t nearly
have made a complete hash of the chase, with to many people giving their
wickets away cheaply. However. a lot of character was shown, especially by the
lower order, to help pull Long Eaton over the winning line and, after several
surprising results in the division, into 3rd place in the league. Promotion
anyone?

Long Eaton U13 B,
got back to winning ways in a high scoring game against Sawley on Sunday
morning.
Sawley won the toss and
elected to bat, and they amassed a competitive total of 280 runs for 3 wickets,
with good contributions from Tom D who made 41 runs in his innings
Good bowling
contributions were from Jason S, Rohan K and James C.
Long Eaton had a hard
target to reach and set about it well with first pairing Isaac B and Chris D
achieving 37 off the first 4 overs.
The next 2 pairs kept
the score rate ticking over at a good pace, only losing 2 wickets. When
the final pair came in, they needed to get 20 runs to win. They achieved
this comfortably with Jason S and James C reaching a final total of 31
This was a good team
performance from the lads!!

Report
Continuing on from their recent good results and
performances in the league, the Kwik Cricket under 11s decisively won their latest two
games against Sandicare and Long Eaton and Sawley B losing only four wickets in both matches
and showing very good composure and
enthusiasm in all departments, ensuring comfortable wins. Jack Durbin
surpased all expectations with an excellent one-handed boundary catch.
These results, coupled with the previous ones, leaves
Long Eaton Cricket Club top of the league with six wins out of six and they
head out
on Friday against two of their nearest rivals Risley and Long Eaton &
Sawley ‘A’
This should be an intriguing encounter.
